Agriculturalists transport a load of hay near Veliko Tărnovo, Bulgaria, in August 1976.  The wagon in this picture has wooden wheels, but the contrast of a donkey pulling a wagon that has tires designed for motor vehicles was a common sight in the Balkans in the 1970s.  The stucco on the building on the left is in need of repair and reveals the wattle and daub method of construction that has been part of vernacular architecture for centuries.  New construction, at the time, used terra cotta as a base for stucco.  Photo by Daniel E. Miller, in August 1976, using a Minolta SR-T 101 and Kodachrome film.

Welcome

The Central European Observer was a journal published in Prague, Czechoslovakia, between 1923 and 1938 that contained a wealth of information about events in Central Europe.  I am borrowing that title to use in a very different context because I have spent a lifetime observing the history and current affairs of Central European states, particularly the Czech and Slovak Republics and their political antecedents.

This site is designed to assist university graduates and undergraduates with improving their assignments, navigating the historical profession, and learning more about Central Europe.  In addition, a few items are of interest for high school students.  Finally, the news, comments, postings, and travel information are of interest to the public in general.

Every few days, I update the news and comment section titled "What's New?  How Is the World Treating You?"  Other pages provide student aids, brief articles on academic matters, links, photos, film clips, travel advice, and other information..  Revisions and additions appear periodically, so be sure to visit from time to time.  I welcome any comments, questions, suggestions, criticisms, corrections, or accolades.  Please send them to me at miller-dem@CentralEuropeanObserver.com.
